What’s Geeky in September 2023?

While summer may be winding down and coming to an end—the geeky stuff isn’t!

That’s right, we’ve got a whole bunch more geeky stuff coming your way. This includes the second season of Amazon’s adaptation of Robert Jordan’s classic novels, the highly anticipated sci-fi game from the creators of Skyrim and Fallout 4, and a new book by V.E. Schwab set in the same Londons as her Darker Shade of Magic series.

Let’s dive right in, shall we?

But first, a word…

The actor’s and writer’s strike is still ongoing. While we at My Geekology are continuing to work, we also ask that you join us in supporting the strike in any way that you can.

One recommended way is to donate to the Entertainment Community Fund online. This non-profit organization helps pay the writers and actors, which in turn helps them keep the fight for fair pay going.

September 1^st:

The Wheel of Time, Season 2

Prime

The Dark One has been defeated. Or has he? Rand al’Thor is the Dragon Reborn, the man who is destined to either save the world or destroy it. As Rand goes into hiding to stave off the madness that is slowly consuming him, his friends have run into a new challenge. Conquerors from beyond the sea have arrived, and even the servants of the Dark take notice of their coming in the second season of the adaptation of Robert Jordan’s classic fantasy series.

Nandor Fodor and the Talking Mongoose

In Theaters

Traveling to the Isle of Man, famed paranormal psychologist Dr. Nandor Fodor has been tasked with investigating a family who claim to have a talking mongoose living in their walls named Geoff. But things are not as simple as they seem. Clearly, someone is posing as Geoff and fooling everyone in the village, including Dr. Fodor’s staff. But who could it be?

Disenchantment, season 5

Netflix

The Netflix animated sitcom from the creators of The Simpsons and Futurama is back for a final season. Bean, Luci, and Elfo are back to try and save Dreamland once and for all against the evil forces of her mom—I mean, Queen Dagmar. You may be feeling pretty confident, but when God says something like “the worst is yet to come…” you know it’s going to be something big.

September 4^th:

Legend of the White Dragon

Limited release

Three years after he was defeated in an epic battle, former superhero Erik Reed returns to the city he swore to protect. The city he failed. Now Erik, known as the White Dragon, must return to Virtuo City to clear his name and reunite with his family. But to do that, he’ll have to face off against the mysterious Dragon Prime.

September 6^th:

I am Groot, season 2

Disney+

An all-new series of shorts following everyone’s favorite tree of few words returns to Disney+. All new mischief and mayhem awaits as Vin Diesel reprises his role and we find a young Groot trying to get intergalactic ice cream, make hot chocolate in a mug as big as himself, build a snowman, and… grow a nose?

September 7th:

Star Trek: Lower Decks, Season 4

Paramount+

The crew of the USS Cerritos is back with more wacky adventures for the ship’s junior officers, aka the lower decks. A mysterious force is moving across the galaxy destroying ships. Why Starfleet decided to send the crew of the Cerritos to investigate is anyone’s guess. But aside from chilling in an Orion bar, escaping an alien zoo, and angling for a promotion, we should all remember that “this is nothing compared to that Pike thing that we’re not supposed to talk about.”

September 8^th:

The Changeling

Based on the novel by Victor LaValle, this fantasy/horror show follows the story of Apollo Kagwa as his fairytale love story takes a decidedly darker turn. Apollo’s marriage to Emma is a happy one until Emma commits a truly horrific act and then vanishes without a trace. As Apollo tries to find her, he becomes more and more involved in a dark and twisted eldritch thriller.

September 10^th:

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, Season 1

AMC/AMC+

This spin-off of the hit series follows Daryl Dixon as he mysteriously wakes up one day having washed ashore in France—the origin of the zombie outbreak—with no idea of how he got there. Taken in by nuns in a peaceful convent, they ask Daryl to transport a young man, Laurent, through lands infected by the dead. But the dead are nowhere near as troublesome as the living when they learn who Laurent really is.

September 15th:

El Conde

Netflix, and select theaters

Augusto was once a respected soldier and general in the Chilean military. Now, he is disrespected and called a thief. To set matters right, he hires an accountant from a good military family, one who will understand what it means to be a general. One who also happens to be distractingly beautiful. And who also happens to have a suitcase full of wooden stakes and silver hammers. Did we mention that Augusto Pinochet, the former dictator of Chile, and his family are vampires?

September 22^nd:

Spy Kids: Armageddon

Netflix

When the greatest spies in the world are captured by an evil and power-hungry game developer, it is up to their children to save the day. But in order to stop the developer’s computer virus that gives him control over all technology, these kids will have to learn to become spies themselves.

September 23^rd:

Unidentified

Limited release

In 1993, aliens first came to the Earth. These giant spherical UFOs came and sat above the major cities of the earth. And then did nothing else. This sci-fi mockumentary and absurdist comedy takes a look at the 29 years that the earth has had with these aliens as people turn to UFO cults, become lost in their dreams, and revel in petty crime as they are faced every day with the possibility of their own destruction.

September 25^th:

The Tower

Video on Demand

The inhabitants of a tower block wake up one morning to find that a mysterious black veil has covered the outside. People who try to go through it don’t come back. Stuck together, the families try to ration their food until whatever this is ends. But as time goes on and the veil remains, the inhabitants of the tower begin to turn on each other.

September 28^th:

Castlevania: Nocturne, season 1

Netflix

Having witnessed his mother’s death at the hands of a vampire when he was young, whip-wielding Richter Belmont joins forces with a group of vampire hunters during the French Revolution. But the vampires are not idle. They have a prophecy of a “vampire messiah” who will eat the sun itself.

September 29^th:

The Creator

In theaters

The war between humans and machines has been going on for a decade, but now the robots have developed an advanced weapon developed by the elusive architect known only as the Creator. The humans have hired a hardened ex-special forces agent, Joshua, to hunt down and destroy this advanced weapon. But when Joshua chases the weapon and finds a little girl instead, he begins to question everything that he has been told about the Creator, robots, and the war.

57 Seconds

Limited release

When a tech blogger discovers a ring that can transport him back 57 seconds, he discovers that he can rewrite the past. At first, he uses it to win money at a casino, then he uses it to fix problems with his girlfriend. But when he tries to go after the company whose drug his sister overdosed on, he sets off a trigger of terrifying events.

Amazon Prime

Set in the world of Amazon’s The Boys, this series follows the lives of the freshman class of Godolkin University, a college for superheroes, as the first students who know that their powers are not God-given but were injected into them. Things get worse as these competitive students learn the even darker secrets that their university has been trying to cover up.

Rune Factory 3 Special

Switch

Now remastered for Switch, you play as a young adventurer trying to settle down in an idyllic fantasy town, trying to hide a terrible secret. Find the balance between humans and monsters in this classic fantasy farming adventure. New to this version is a “Newlywed Mode” that allows you to marry one of the game’s 11 eligible bachelorettes.

Baldur’s Gate 3

Now available on PlayStation 5, play the game that has gotten overwhelmingly positive reviews on Steam. Starfield

Pilot and command the starship of your dreams as you explore and fight across a universe designed by the same company behind Skyrim and Fallout 4. You join Constellation, the last group of space explorers, and will have the chance to join and work with various factions as you explore new worlds and lifeforms and fight for the future of humanity.

September 8^th:

Fae Farm

Switch, PC

This fantasy farming sim allows you to explore the mythical world of Azoria. Build up your homestead, grow your crops, and foster deep relationships with your neighbors and friends. That’s not even mentioning all of the potion-making, crafting, and exploring you’ll get to do in the magical forest.

September 12^th:

Super Bomberman R 2

PS 5, Xbox Series X/S, PS 4, Xbox One, Switch, PC

Back with more Battle Modes than ever, this new edition to the Bomberman series allows you to blow up your friends in this classic PvP Battle Royale. Gather your friends and go toe to toe in this game, which includes a new “Castle” mode that allows players to fight in attacking and defending teams.

September 14^th:

Ad Infinitum

PS 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC

You play as a German soldier trying to piece together your past as you relive the horrors of WWI. Grisly monsters haunt your waking moments as you try to piece together clues about your life in between the walls of your deserted manner and the barbed wire of the No Man’s Land.

September 15^th:

Baten Kaitos I & II HD Remaster

Switch

Two JRPG classics return to the Switch. After defeating the evil god, humanity fled to live on a continent in the sky. Peace and tranquility were the norm. Everything changes when a young boy named Kalas meets a mysterious girl named Xelha. This sets off a series of events that leads to that young man calling on the name of the Guardian Spirit.

September 18^th:

Gloomhaven

Based on the highest-rated board game of all time, this turn-based dungeon-crawler sees you leading a band of mercenaries in the unforgiving city of Gloomhaven. Adapted from the original board game, this branching campaign of 95-story missions pits your greed against your morality.

September 19^th:

Lies of P

PS 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC

This dark souls-like game takes the story of Pinocchio and turns it on its head. You are Geppetto’s puppet, created to deal with the unimaginable monsters and untrustworthy figures that have befallen the plagued city of Krat.

Mortal Kombat 1

PS 5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch, PC

The 12^th game in the hit fighting game franchise returns. The beginning of a new universe, this game promises to show our favorite characters filling new roles. But while the game promises a “blank canvas,” it also promises new options like Peacemaker, Omni-Man, Homelander, and more joining the fight.

September 20^th:

Party Animals

Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PC

This casual multiplayer fighting game allows you to pick your fuzzy combatant and go head to head, toe to toe, and paw to paw against your friends as you fight across a variety of zany locations like a nuclear submarine, winter wonderland, and jungle.

September 21^st:

Eternights

PS 5, PS 4, PC

A unique blend of dating and action, this post-apocalyptic JRPG sees something turning the people of the world into monsters. You are gifted with unique powers, but you can learn even more by growing closer to the five quirky and lovable characters in the game. Besides… the end of the world makes a great conversation starter.

Payday 3

PS 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC

The much-anticipated sequel to one of the most popular co-op shooters ever is finally here. The Payday Crew, the walking nightmare of the underworld and law-enforcement agencies wherever they go, have been brought out of retirement by a new threat and the opportunity of New York City.

September 26^th:

El Paso, Elsewhere

Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PC

This supernatural neo-noir third-person shooter allows you to hunt vampires, werewolves, fallen angels, and other nightmarish creatures as you go floor by floor in a motel in El Paso, Texas that just gained 46 floors… all of them going down.

Mineko’s Night Market

Switch, PC

You play as Mineko, a curious girl who has recently moved to a struggling Japanese-inspired island where the locals worship the Sun Cat, Nikko. Evade nosy agents and free lots of trapped cats in this cozy game that celebrates Japanese culture and introduces us to a heartwarming story of friendship, tradition, and so many cats.

My Time at Sandrock

Travel to the city of Sandrock, deep in the desert, where you are a builder. Rebuild your workshop, gather resources, and build new machines to help this struggling post-apocalyptic stave off collapse. Paleo Pines

Stop Everything! This is a farming sim with dinosaurs!

Okay, I’m fine now. Journey to Paleo Pines, a charming island filled with quirky townsfolk, friendly dinosaurs, and mysteries. You have inherited a run-down ranch, so you and your trusty Parasaurolophus friend go out to turn your ranch into a thriving farm and cozy dinosaur sanctuary.

Infinity Strash: Dragon Quest The Adventure of Dai
