Summer may not officially start until June, but the blockbuster season has.
As the weather gets warmer, all the cool Geeky stuff comes out of hibernation. We’ve got a new Star Wars show, a new season of Doctor Who, the Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut, and even a new Veronica Roth novel. And that’s not even close to all that May has in store.

Dragonkeeper
In Theaters—Limited Release
In this elegantly animated Chinese/Spanish collaboration a young girl is tasked with saving ancient Han Dynasty China and fulfilling her destiny. Ping must find the last of the dragon eggs and become…the Dragonkeeper.
New Life
In Theaters—Limited Release
Details on the plot of this apocalyptic thriller are closely guarded, though I can tell you that it involves two women: one on the run from mysterious forces and the other, the fixer hired to bring her in. Stars Sonya Walger (Lost, Flashforward) and Hayley Erin (General Hospital).
Mars Express
In Theaters—Limited Release
This animated sci-fi adventure follows a human investigator and her android partner on the case of a wealthy businessman trying to track down a notorious hacker. As they dig deeper into the case, they risk uncovering secrets that will change everything. Mars Express will be released in French with English subtitles.
May 4th
My Hero Academia, Season 7

This season will start with the American hero, Star and Stripe, coming to U.A. at All Might’s request. Then we’ve got the significantly less fun U.A. Traitor Arc in which one of Midoriya’s classmates is revealed to be the traitor they’ve been searching for. Amidst all this, our heroes must still prepare for their final battle against the Paranormal Liberation Front.
Star Wars: Tales of the Empire, Season 1

This newest installment in the Star Wars universe follows former Jedi, Barriss Offee (who you may recall as a former friend of Ahsoka in Clone Wars) and a vengeful young woman named Morgan Elspeth as they make their way in a rapidly changing world.

Dark Matter, Season 1
Apple TV+
This mind-bending story of alternate lives stars Joel Edgerton (Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Green Knight) as a man kidnapped away from his true life and forced to try and fight his way back to his family through all the lives he might have lived. Based on the book by Blake Crouch.
Reginald the Vampire, Season 2
SYFY
Angels? Oh yeah! Reginald, along with Maurice and co., will spend this year in conflict with the heavenly host. When angel Balestro threatens the existence of all vampires, it’ll be up to our lovable hero to find a way out of the mess of blood and feathers.

In Theaters-Limited Release
In a distant future- mechanized and sand-blasted-the people cry out for a hero. Enter a new avatar of the Hindu god Vishnu, sent to protect the world from evil forces. This sci-fi adventure comes to us from India and languages listed include Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, and, thankfully for me, English.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes

A follow-up to 2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes, this adventure takes place many years after the reign of Caesar and follows three main characters: two apes and a human. One ape starts to enslave other groups to find more human tech, while the other searches for freedom. The freedom-loving ape allies with a human girl, but what is it that she wants?
Doctor Who, Season 14
Disney +
The time of the Fourteenth Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) has arrived! Alongside Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson), we’re in for a whole new season of time-tripping adventure. The trailer promises settings from Regency England to the age of the dinosaurs with, of course, some time set aside for Ruby’s mum.
Interview with the Vampire, Season 2
AMC
It’s off to Paris for Louis and Claudia in the aftermath of World War II, and it’s a whole new ballgame in that Dubai apartment now that Armand has revealed his true identity. The deliciously twisted series is back to adapt the second half of the source novel by Anne Rice.

Demon Slayer: Hashira Training Arc

This season the gang is headed to Stone Hashira Gyomei Himejima so that they can get stronger and prepare for their battle against Muzan Kibutsuji, the first demon. Meanwhile, Kibutsuji still hunts Nezuko and Ubuyashiki.

Prime Video
This wild sci fi-mystery-in-a-cowboy-hat continues with the arrival of a stranger named Autumn, played by Imogen Poots (Vivarium). Then, of course, there are the secrets of the perfectly round void on Abbott’s land, the disappearing mountains, and the beginning of the appearing anachronisms.

In Theaters
This star-studded kid’s film directed by John Krasinski (A Quiet Place) follows a young girl with the ability to see other people’s imaginary friends (called I.F.s). Especially the ones abandoned as their kids grow up. Some of these I.F.s befriend the girl, but others turn bad.
Coma
In Theaters-Limited Release
The 2022 French sci-fi drama is coming to a limited number of big screens in the U.S. During a time of isolation (think Covid-19 quarantine) a young woman falls under the spell of mysterious blogger, Patricia Coma, played by Julia Faure (The Beast). It gets weirder as reality starts to blur around the young woman’s hopes, fears, and dreams.
May 23rd
Evil, Season 4
Paramount +
It’s the final season and hopefully, that means answers. Of course, our intrepid team will have to have a final face-off with Leland and his cadre of demons, but there are other mysteries yet to be solved. Will Kristen end up raising that antichrist? Will David be able to escape the Vatican’s tight grip? Will Ben be able to banish the visions of the jinn? Guess we’ll have to watch and see.
May 24th
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

Finally, the backstory for everyone’s favorite wastelander! A prequel to 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road, this movie follows a young Furiosa, played by Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen’s Gambit), snatched from her idyllic childhood in the Green Place of Many Mothers by the biker horde of Dementus, played by Chris Hemsworth (Thor).

Jennifer Lopez plays a counterterrorism expert tasked with capturing a renegade robot bent on destroying humanity in an effort to end war. The star-studded cast includes Simu Liu (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) as the bad robot, Harlan, and Gregory James Cohan (The VelociPastor) as Smith, a possibly helpful AI.
Jurassic World: Chaos Theory, season 1

Six years after the events of Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, and after the events of Jurassic World: Dominion, the “Nublar Six” have returned to the rest of the world only to find the dinosaurs that they escaped living among them. After tragedy befalls one of them, the rest are catapulted into investigating a global conspiracy that threatens both humans and dinosaurs.

Haikyuu!! The Dumpster Battle

After four seasons this celebrated sports anime is finally getting its time on the big screen. The titular Dumpster Battle is the ultimate match between two underdog teams: our beloved Karasuno High and their nemesis, Nekoma High. Volleyball won’t be this exciting again until the Olympics start in July!
