What’s Geeky in November 2023?

The only socially acceptable way to dress up as an adult outside of a Con has now come and gone, which means that not only is it time to get ready to eat way too much turkey, but it is time for the beginning of the Holiday Season’s geeky releases. Woohoo!

And there’s a bunch of stuff coming your way, too. From a return of the Doctor/Donna, to a new League of Legends game, and even a new book by Jim Butcher, there’s something for everyone to feast on.

TV/Movies

November 2nd 

All the Light We Cannot See, limited series

November 3rd 

Quiz Lady

Hulu's new series Quiz Lady.

Strait-laced and brilliant CPA Anne finds herself teaming up with her estranged wild-child older sister Jenny when their mother is kidnapped by bookies for lack of payment on her gambling debts. The fastest way to make the most money is for Anne to win at her favorite quiz show. With Sandra Oh and Awkwafina in the lead, this one is sure to be excellent.

Fingernails

Fingernails a new series on Apple TV.

Anna (Jessie Buckley) and Ryan (Jeremy Allan White) have been scientifically proven to be in love. So why does Anna feel kinda meh? To find out, she takes a job at the institute that developed the love technology and meets Amir (Riz Ahmed), for whom she feels decidedly not meh.

Invincible, season 2

Invincible season two a superhero series on Amazon Prime.

How will Mark fare in a post-Omni-Man world? Will he rise to the occasion as a true hero? Or become just like his father? We’ve got old friends and new enemies (voiced by a dizzying array of top-tier actors), but never fear, we haven’t seen the last of J.K. Simmons’ incomparable Omni-Man.

November 4th 

Attack on Titan The Final Season, part 4

The final season of Attack on Titan airing this November.

The final part of the final season is finally here. It’s been 10 years and too many plot twists to count, but Eren Jaeger’s quest for answers and revenge will conclude this year.

For All Mankind, season 4

For All Mankind is new science fiction series where the Soviets won the Space Race.

In this epic alternate history, where the Soviets won the Space Race and humans reached Mars by 1995, the stakes are raised once more. When an expedition to Mars comes across an asteroid containing more iridium than has been harvested in all of history, will profit win out over morals?

The plot details of this sci-fi thriller are being kept closely guarded, but we know that it’s the first feature film to be filmed from one fixed camera angle and that it stars Melvin Gregg (American Vandal) and Bradley Whitford (Get Out, Cabin in the Woods). 

November 14th

A new Hulu miniseries taking a new look at a classic.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, season 1

An Apple TV series where we see the world deal with Kaiju.

After the revelation to the world that Godzilla and the other monsters really exist, the two siblings explore their family connection to the secretive organization known as Monarch. The plot spans three generations and the cast boasts two generations of Russell: Kurt and Wyatt.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, season 1

Scott Pilgram gets an animated series developed by the original artist.

Based on the acclaimed graphic novel series, this new animated adaptation is co-developed by the original artist and writer, Bryan Lee O’Malley, and boasts the full cast of the iconic 2010 live-action adaptation reprising their roles.

Biosphere

Biosphere a comedy about the last two men on Earth.

Vudu, Prime, Apple TV+

This sci-fi comedy stars Sterling K. Brown (This is Us) and Mark Duplass as the last two men on Earth. Make that the last two humans. Duplass co-wrote this new look at survival and adaptability.

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes

The history of the famous Hunger Games films and books in a new series.

In Theaters

The history of Suzanne Collins’ classic dystopian world gets a close-up in this story from the world of The Hunger Games. A young Coriolanus Snow is forced to come face-to-face with the realities of the games and the nature of the country he will one day lead—and lose. 

November 22nd 

Wish

Disney's new film about when wishing on a star doesn't turn out quite like you expected.

In Theaters

This newest Disney feature film sees young Asha making a wish upon a star. But when the star grants her wish a little too literally, Asha will have to contend with an angry king and her pet goat given the ability to talk. The goat is played by Alan Tudyk (Firefly) which is reason enough for me to see it.

November 25th 

Dr. Who 60th Anniversary Special

One more episode of Dr. Who airing on Disney Plus.

The greatest pair in the longest-running sci-fi TV show ever is back! For one night only, David Tennant’s Doctor and Catherine Tate’s Donna are reunited and up to their old tricks (saving the Earth, mostly). After that, it’ll be time for Ncuti Gatwa to take the TARDIS console and sail off into the stars, and for the adventures of the 15th Doctor to begin.

Star Ocean: The Second Story R 

A new Star Ocean game where you get to pick either protagonist this time.

The classic JRPG series is back and this time you can choose to play as Claude or Rena, and yes, this choice will have consequences. Explore the science fantasy setting in the innovative 2.5D style (3D graphics and 2D pixel characters) and experience the fast-paced, real-time battles that Star Ocean is known for.  

The Smurfs 2: The Prisoner of the Green Stone

The Invincible

November 9th

Like A Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III 

The next entry to the Call of Duty series.

A direct sequel to the wildly popular COD:MWII, this newest entry in over a decade finds Captain Price and Task Force 141 fighting zombies and their old nemesis, Makarov. There are guns and knives, helicopters and bombs, as well as boats and parachutes. What more could Modern Warfare ask for?

The Day Before 

The Day Before, a survival game where you get to purchase and hunt for your own resources.

The post-apocalyptic survival game genre is heating up with this new game from Fntastic. Purchase houses and cars, hunt infected, work odd jobs at the survivor’s colony, and even attack other survivors for their stuff in the lush world of this new game.

November 15th

Teardown 

Teardown is a sandbox where you can cause as much chaos and destruction as you like.

This delightful heist game offers 40 different missions as well as a sandbox to create your own levels. And did I mention that every level is fully destructible? Destroy as much of the voxel environment as you want, but make sure you don’t get caught in the middle of your heist!

The Last Faith 

The Last Faith is a dark fantasy side-scroller game releasing in November.

Soulslike and Metroidvania collide in this new 2D pixel-style gothic world. You play as Eryk, an amnesiac with a big sword and bigger questions. You’ll need to use all of your bloodiest moves to figure out Eryk’s story and kill the dark monsters in your way. 

November 16th

Flashback 2 

The second Flashback game where you now much save your friend Conrad.

It’s been 31 years since Conrad B. Hart and his AI pal A.I.S.H.A. first introduced us to the Galactic Bureau of Investigation. Now, we join them again as they search for Conrad’s friend Ian amidst an invasion by the alien Morphs. There’s plenty of action in this new game by the original Flashback’s creator, Paul Cuisset.

November 17th

Naruto X Boruto Ultimate Ninja Storm Connections 

Play through more of Naruto and Sasuke's rivalry in Naruto X Boruto Ultimate Ninja Storm Connections.

Fast-paced ninja battles are a given with a Naruto game, but now we’ve got Naruto and Sasuke’s rivalry recut as well as a whole new story for Boruto. When Naruto is at its best, the fight combos are endless (with over 130 playable characters, this game looks promising) and the stories are classic. We’ll see if Naruto X Boruto lives up to the legacy.
